How to prepare for IES/ESE Exam | Crack IES Exam 2020

Indian Engineering Services (IES) is the best career option for engineers looking forward to joining the highest government service related to engineering. Candidates qualifying the IES Exam hold the position of ‘Class - I’ officers. They are designated as department heads for government PSUs like various units of Railways, PWD, etc. and are assigned the roles and responsibilities associated with the same. 

IES or the Engineering Services Exam (ESE) is organized by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The exam is an opportunity to join the government and work in one of the four branches of engineering -

  • Civil Engineering (CE)
  • Mechanical Engineering (ME)
  • Electrical Engineering (EE)
  • Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering (E&T)

IES Exam Eligibility Criteria
a.  An Indian citizen or a national of Nepal, Bhutan 

b.  Tibetan refugee

c.  Must be in the age group of 21-30 years. 

d. A native of India from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India

e. Age limit relaxation as per the rules - 5 years for SC/ST candidates and 3 years for OBC applicants

F. The minimum educational qualification is a degree in engineering from a recognized university or equivalent degree/diploma.


IES Exam Pattern
The exam is organized in three phases. Candidates qualifying the Prelims exam are eligible to appear for the Mains exam. The ones qualifying at Stage -II (Mains exam) are called for the interview. The final merit list includes marks scored in the Mains exam plus score in the personality test (interview).

  • Prelims exam - The first phase is an objective-type exam. There are two question papers - General Studies & Engineering Aptitude, and Engineering Discipline. GS paper carries 200 marks and the duration is two hours. The Paper-II is related to one of the four branches selected by you. The paper is of 300 marks having three hours of duration.

Negative marking is applicable for both papers. Marks scored in the Prelims exam are not counted while preparing the final merit list.  

  • Mains exam - This is a descriptive type exam. There are two question papers related to the subject you have chosen. Both papers are 300 marks each. The duration is three hours for an individual paper.

  • Interview (personality test) - Those candidates qualifying the Mains exam are called for the interview or personality test which is of 200 marks. The final merit list is prepared including the marks of the Mains exam and interview.

Tips to Prepare for IES Exam 

  • Preparing a good strategy is of utmost importance to appear for the IES exam. 
  • Prepare your fundamentals based on the study material used during engineering degree. 
  • Study NCERT textbooks from class VI-XII to prepare for GK. Read a newspaper and monthly magazine Pratiyogita Nirdeshika. Questions in the GS paper focus on energy and environment, science and engineering, industrial development and engineering and governance along with current affairs. Read books by Satyaprakesh, Swadesh Kumar and Jaykumar. 
  • Solve previous year question papers
  • Practice regularly 
  • Prepare self-notes
  • Focus on time management
