Bright career opportunities in Mathematics and Mathematics-related fields

The word ' Mathematics ' is derived from a Greek word , which means ' inclination towards study ' . Although it is very difficult to give a universally accepted definition of Mathematics , it can be broadly defined as the expression , quantity , their relation , operation and measurement by numbers and symbols. If we say in simple colloquial language, mathematics is related to the study of numbers and their various calculations. Careful analysis and reasoning are very important skills of mathematics. It is worth noting that mathematics is as old as our civilization. Mathematics is a very useful and fascinating branch of human knowledge. It includes many subjects of study. It is worth noting that mathematics is a recognized professional career and is a major subject chosen as a career by students in India. There has been a strong tradition of mathematics in India since ancient times and for this reason various centers of study have been established here in mathematics and related sciences. Even today there are many institutions in India doing world-class research in mathematics. A large number of students interested in calculations choose mathematics as a career. After completing a course in mathematics and related fields, bright employment opportunities are available.

It is worth noting that every person uses mathematics at every step in his life. Mathematics is an essential part of almost all scientific studies. Scientists use mathematics to design experiments , analyze information , express their conclusions in a proper form through mathematical principles and make accurate predictions based on these conclusions. Subjects like astronomy , chemistry and physics depend on mathematics. Social science , economics , psychology, statistics etc. also depend on many other branches of mathematics. Economics Mathematics is used extensively to create mathematical models of economic systems. Mathematicians use mathematical theory , computational techniques , algorithms and the latest mathematical technology to solve economic , scientific , engineering , physics and business problems.

Major careers in Mathematics and related to Mathematics are as follows-

<Mathematician - A mathematician is a person whose main field of study or research is mathematics. Mathematicians are associated with special problems related to logic , numbers, etc. They do research and solve problems. Mathematicians try to uncover the unsolved mysteries of mathematics.

<Teaching- Mathematics teachers are in demand yesterday , today and will be in demand in the future. Because mathematics is a core subject in the entire school education. This profession is a high-paying job in India. If you have a deep fascination for numbers and are interested in teaching students, then you can also make a career in the field of teaching. Mathematicians working in the field of education have mixed responsibilities in teaching and research. There are many career paths in teaching in the field of mathematics. You can work in schools and colleges or can earn a good living by teaching coaching or tuition independently.

<Banking- Crores of new accounts are being opened in banks due to schemes like Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana and to promote financial inclusion. Due to this, banks are rapidly increasing their branches, which is creating thousands of new employment opportunities in this sector. Youth having expertise in mathematics can work in the following areas of banking- accountant , customer service , front desk operation , cash handling , account opening , current account , savings account , mortgage loan underwriter , loan processing officer , bank end operation , product marketing and sales executive , recovery officer , retail asset manager , property appraiser and customer service executive. Banks give loans for setting up business and for various development works and create lakhs of employment and career opportunities in the banking finance sector.

<Operations Research Analyst - Operations research is an interdisciplinary branch of applied mathematics and formal sciences that uses advanced techniques such as mathematical modeling and statistical analysis to find the best solution to complex problems for decision making. Operations research analysts apply mathematical modeling and implementation to develop and interpret information. Operations research analysts help managers make better decisions and solve problems. If you want to make a bright career in this field, then you must have strong quantitative , computer skills and high knowledge of mathematics.

<Chartered Accountant - The rapid growth of the Indian economy after liberalization and globalization has made careers in the field of accounting and finance very popular and Chartered Accountant is a highly prestigious career option in this field. Chartered Accountant is a specialist in accounting , auditing and taxation . Youngsters interested in mathematics and commerce can make a bright career in this field.

<Software Engineer - Indian software engineers are making a splash not only in India but also globally. The global IT industry is ready to employ Indian software engineers. It is worth mentioning that software engineers design and develop software. They apply the principles of computer science and mathematical analysis to create , test , analyze and evaluate software applications and their systems . Software engineers are also experts in computing systems , software architecture and the nature and limitations of hardware and ensure that these systems are functioning properly. There are excellent employment prospects in this field.

<Computer Systems Analyst - There are ample job opportunities for computer systems analysts in software , research , education, security , banking , economics , engineering , computer science , physics , technical fields etc. Most systems analysts work on specific types of computer systems such as business accounting and financial systems or scientific and engineering systems to prepare cost-benefit and return on investment analyses and help managers decide whether a proposed technology will be financially viable or not.

It is worth mentioning that in our country, Mathematics is taught as a compulsory subject till class 10th. If students want, they can take this subject in 11th and 12th classes. However, students who want to pursue engineering and technology courses have to study Mathematics in 11th and 12th . Mathematics is an important component of quantitative ability and information interpretation for most of the entrance and recruitment examinations in the country. At the undergraduate level, Mathematics is taught under B.Sc. In some universities, Mathematics is also taught as a main or honours subject.

The two world-class institutes in India offering mathematics education at the undergraduate level are the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) , Bangalore and the Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI) , Chennai. ISI offers B.Maths degree course in Mathematics and Computer Science and CMI offers B.Sc. degree course in Mathematics , admission to which is through a written entrance examination held at various centres in India at the end of May each year. Both ISI and CMI also admit students who qualify the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO) or are Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) scholars.

Other major institutes in the country offering specialized courses in Mathematics are:

<Course in Industrial Mathematics Pune University , Available in Pune.

< Numerical Mathematics course is available at Madurai Kamaraj University , Madurai.

< mathematical economics The course is available at Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya , Indore.

<Courses in Applied Statistics are available at University of Madras , Chennai.

More than 135 universities in India offer mathematics courses. These courses are run by mathematics departments. There is often a single department for both mathematics and computer science. Some universities offer specialization in pure mathematics and applied mathematics. Students can also apply for integrated M.Sc. and Ph.D. degree courses offered at some places in India.

The main institutes of the country for MSc-PhD course are as follows-

< Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) , Mumbai . Admission to the PhD course of this institute is done through a written exam followed by an interview.

< Integrated M.Sc. degree course in Mathematics is also available at Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) , Pune/Mohali/Kolkata/Trivandrum/Bhopal and National Institute of Science Education Research (NISER) , Bhubaneswar. IISER admits students on the basis of IIT entrance exam while NISER admits students through National Entrance Test (NEST).

< Students can also take admission in the integrated MSc course in Mathematics offered by the University of Hyderabad , Hyderabad. The university admits students through a written examination held in early June.

< Pondicherry University and various IITs offer five-year integrated courses in mathematics.

Apart from these special courses, there are also courses in General , Pure and Applied Mathematics such as Computational Mathematics , Mathematical Statistics and Mathematical Economics . There are several courses available on subjects such as Mathematics with Computer Applications , Industrial Mathematics and Functional Mathematics.

Two other very important areas of mathematics are statistical quality control and operations research. The major institutes offering courses in this field are-
