CBSE to Include Article 370 Removal, Triple Talaq Ban in Law Curriculum

Starting from the 2026–27 academic session, CBSE has decided to include major legal reforms in its law subject for Classes 11 and 12. Topics such as the removal of Article 370, the ban on Triple Talaq, and the decriminalization of Section 377 will now be part of the syllabus.

Students will now study the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) in place of the Indian Penal Code, Criminal Procedure Code, and Indian Evidence Act, respectively. These new laws were enacted in 2023–24 as part of a major legal overhaul in India.

The CBSE Curriculum Committee had approved the proposal, and it was later ratified by the CBSE Governing Body in June. The changes aim to align the curriculum with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, promoting legal awareness and understanding among school students.

To facilitate the changes, an expert committee will be formed, and a content development agency may be appointed to ensure timely preparation of updated textbooks. The new materials will be designed in a modern and engaging style to make legal concepts accessible and relevant for students.

CBSE first introduced law as an optional subject in 2013 for Class 11 and in 2014 for Class 12. Initially, only a few schools offered the subject. With these new updates, the board aims to bring legal education into the mainstream.
