Zohraan Mamdani Becomes First Indian-Origin Mayor of New York City
Zohraan Mamdani has won the mayoral election of New York City. He has become the first South Asian and Muslim individual to hold the mayoral position in the largest city of the United States.
The 34-year-old Mamdani had been leading the New York City mayoral race for several months and on November 4, he defeated Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa and politically seasoned former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent candidate.
Mamdani had previously defeated Cuomo in the Democratic primary for the mayoral position and was declared the winner in June this year.
