Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar Resigns Two Years Before Term End
India’s 14th Vice President, Jagdeep Dhankhar, resigned from his post on 21 July citing health reasons. Dhankhar was 74 years old and his term was supposed to continue until 10 August 2027.
On 10 July, during an event, he had said, “With God’s grace, I will retire in August 2027.”
He submitted his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu under Article 67(A), stating: “Prioritizing my health and following medical advice, I hereby tender my resignation as the Vice President of India with immediate effect.”
In his letter, Dhankhar thanked the President for her cooperation and cordial relations. He also expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister and the Cabinet for their support.
However, his resignation will take effect only after the President’s approval.
