Important Alert for Travelers to the USA: Avoid These Actions or Risk Visa Cancellation
The US Embassy in India has issued a strong warning to travelers that committing crimes such as assault, theft, or burglary in the United States can result in severe legal consequences, including visa cancellation. The embassy emphasized that the US values law and order and expects all foreign visitors to follow its laws.
The embassy stated: “Engaging in assault, theft, or burglary in the US will not only result in legal issues but can also lead to the cancellation of your visa. Additionally, such individuals may be declared ineligible for a US visa in the future.”
This warning was released via the US Embassy's official X (formerly Twitter) handle on July 17. It came in light of a viral video circulating on social media, allegedly showing a woman of Indian origin being detained by US police officers for shoplifting. The authenticity of the video, however, remains unverified.
US Embassy Reiterates: Visa Is a Privilege, Not a Right
In a previous post dated June 19, the embassy reiterated that a US visa is a privilege, not a right. Even after issuance, a visa remains subject to review, and any violation of US law can result in revocation by immigration officers.
Trump Administration’s Crackdown on Illegal Immigrants
This advisory comes amid an ongoing crackdown by US authorities on illegal immigration and criminal offenses by non-citizens. According to the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, over 142,000 people were deported from the US between January 20 and April 29 alone.
Strict Penalties for Theft in the US
Theft in the US is a punishable offense with both fines and imprisonment. The specific penalties vary by state, but the consequences are serious across all jurisdictions.
Travelers are advised to strictly adhere to all US laws to ensure safe and uninterrupted stay in the country.
