Trump Imposes 50% Tariff on Indian Goods, India Responds Strongly
On August 6, President Donald Trump followed through on his threat and imposed a 25% additional tariff on Indian goods entering the United States. The order stated that India was purchasing oil directly and indirectly from Russia, and as a result, the additional tariff is being imposed. This new tariff will be effective 21 days after the announcement.
Trump had earlier announced a 25% tariff on Indian goods, effective from August 7. However, following this latest announcement, starting August 27, the tariff on Indian exports to the US will increase to 50%. India strongly opposed the US decision, labeling it inconsistent, unjust, and unfair. The Indian government also hinted at retaliatory measures, asserting that it would take every necessary action to safeguard its national interests.
Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi also criticized Trump's decision, calling it economic blackmail. He warned the Indian government not to yield under pressure, suggesting that Trump was attempting to coerce India into unfair agreements. Prior to this announcement, Indian goods were already subjected to tariffs, but the new 50% tariff will be additional. However, pharmaceutical products and electronics, particularly smartphones, will remain exempt from this increased tariff.
