Trump Announces 25% Tariff on India Starting August 1 – Trade Deal Talks Ongoing

Trump Announces 25% Tariff on Indian Products Starting August 1, 2025

US President Donald Trump has declared a 25% tariff on Indian products, which will come into effect on August 1, 2025. The announcement was made on his social media platform, Truth Social.

This decision comes amid ongoing trade negotiations between the United States and India. While both countries have been discussing a trade agreement, progress has been slow. On July 29, Trump hinted at this tariff when asked by a journalist if India would be paying tariffs in the range of 20-25%. Trump responded, "Yes, I think so. India is my friend. They ended the war with Pakistan at my request... India has been a good friend, but India has imposed higher tariffs than almost any other country."

It is worth noting that the US and India are in talks over a trade agreement. Despite several rounds of discussions, no concrete agreement has been reached yet. A US team is scheduled to visit India next month. Previously, Indian Minister Piyush Goyal had stated that negotiations with the US are ongoing. He mentioned that the discussions are not conducted in front of cameras but are happening in an atmosphere of cooperation, with the aim of securing a beneficial trade deal for both countries.

Since Donald Trump's second presidential term began in January 2025, the world has witnessed the beginning of a trade war, with rising tensions between the US and various nations, including India. Trump recently mentioned that a trade deal with India is imminent and will open up the Indian market further.
