Trisa–Gayatri Pair Crowned Champions, Srikanth Misses Out on Trophy
Trisa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand defended their women’s doubles title at the Syed Modi International Super 300 tournament by defeating Japan’s Kaho Osawa and Mai Tanabe in three games. Kidambi Srikanth, however, lost to Hong Kong’s Jason Gunawan, missing his chance to end an eight-year title drought.
Srikanth, the 2017 French Open champion and 2021 World Championships silver medallist, went down 16-21, 21-8, 20-22 in a 67-minute battle. This was his closest attempt at a title since reaching the Malaysia Masters final earlier this year.
Top-seeded Indians Trisa and Gayatri fought back after losing the first game and defeated the world No. 35 Japanese pair 17-21, 21-13, 21-15 in a thrilling final lasting one hour and 16 minutes. The duo played only their second tournament after Gayatri’s return from a shoulder injury.
Gunawan started strongly and took advantage of Srikanth’s errors to win the opening game. Srikanth dominated the second game with sharp net play and powerful smashes. The decider remained neck-and-neck until Srikanth’s final shot went long, giving Gunawan the title.
In the women’s doubles final, the opening rally lasted 49 shots. Both teams fought fiercely, but the Indian pair regained momentum in the second game and dominated the rallies. Trisa’s quick reflexes and Gayatri’s smashes helped them secure the third game and retain their crown.
