Tirupati Balaji Temple Stampede: 6 Dead
On the night of January 8, a stampede occurred near the Vaikuntha Dwara Darshan ticket counter at the Tirupati Balaji Temple in Andhra Pradesh, resulting in the death of 6 people, including a woman, and 40 others were injured. The injured have been sent to the hospital for treatment.
Bhanu Prakash, a member of the trust, informed that 91 counters were opened for ticket distribution. Over 4,000 devotees were standing in line near the counters. They were asked to line up in the Bairagi Paatida Park. In the rush to move ahead, chaos ensued, and in the stampede, people trampled on each other. A woman named Mallika died on the spot.
Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Chandrababu Naidu, expressed his condolences over the incident. He contacted senior officials to gather information about the situation and ordered relief measures to be taken at the site to ensure better treatment for the injured.
The door where the incident occurred was scheduled to be opened on January 10. On January 7, the Executive Officer of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), J Shyamala Rao, mentioned that the Vaikuntha Dwara Darshan would be opened from January 10 to 19 for Vaikuntha Ekadashi. The protocol darshan will begin at 4:30 AM, followed by Sarv Darshan at 8 AM. Devotees were waiting in line to collect tokens for this period, with an estimated 7 lakh pilgrims expected during these 10 days.
Tirupati Temple: One of India's Richest Temples
Tirupati, located in the Tirumala hills of Andhra Pradesh, is one of the most famous and richest temples in India. The temple is dedicated to Lord Venkateswara and was built by King Tondman. The temple’s consecration was done in the 11th century by Ramanujacharya. It is believed that Lord Venkateswara took a loan from the god of wealth, Kubera, to marry Padmavati, and the loan remains unpaid. Devotees donate money to help repay the interest on this debt. Every year, the temple receives around a ton of gold in donations.
