Three Villages in Tamil Nadu Celebrate Silent Diwali
For the past 17 years, nearly eight villages surrounding the Vellode Bird Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu have not burst any firecrackers during Diwali. This unique tradition is observed to ensure that the migratory birds that visit the sanctuary are not disturbed by the loud noises.
These eight villages are home to around 750 families. The bird sanctuary was established in 1996, covering an area of 80 hectares. Every year, from September to December, thousands of birds from all around the world migrate to this area, especially from countries like Australia and New Zealand.
Locals are deeply concerned that the loud sounds of firecrackers may scare away the birds, potentially making them abandon the site permanently. To prevent this, the community has collectively agreed to refrain from celebrating Diwali with crackers.
According to 73-year-old resident Chinnasamy, this practice began shortly after the bird sanctuary was set up. "People here take great care of the birds," he said. "Until two years ago, even sparklers were not used in the village. Now some children do light them, but firecrackers are still not allowed."
These migratory birds not only stay in the area for two to three months but also build nests and lay eggs here before flying back with their young ones. This act of environmental sensitivity and bird conservation has become a proud tradition of the region.
