Sushila Karki Becomes Nepal's First Female Interim Prime Minister
On September 12, Sushila Karki was sworn in as Nepal's first female interim Prime Minister. The oath was administered by President Ram Chandra Paudel in the presence of the Vice President, Chief Justice, and diplomats from various countries.
India's Ambassador to Nepal, Navin Srivastava, met with Sushila Karki and congratulated her on the historic appointment. Karki now holds the responsibility of conducting new parliamentary elections before March 5, 2026.
Just a day before the swearing-in, President Ram Chandra Paudel announced the dissolution of the Parliament. This move has sparked political opposition, particularly from the Communist Party of Nepal (UML), led by former Prime Minister K.P. Oli.
UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel has called on party workers to protest in the streets against the decision. Meanwhile, Gen-Z political leaders have declined to join the interim government. They stated that although they will not be part of the administration, they will monitor and oversee the government’s performance.
The Government of India has welcomed Sushila Karki's appointment and expressed hope that the interim government will contribute to peace and stability in Nepal. India reiterated its commitment to work closely with Nepal as a neighbor, democratic partner, and long-standing development ally, for the welfare of both nations and their people.
