Supreme Court Directs Publication of 1.25 Crore Voters List in West Bengal
On January 19, the Supreme Court of India gave another chance to 1.25 crore voters in West Bengal to add their names to the voter list. Citizens are required to submit their documents to the Election Commission within 10 days.
The Election Commission had issued logical discrepancy notices to 1.25 crore voters during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) due to errors in names, surnames, and ages. The Court directed the Election Commission to publicly display the corrected voter lists at Gram Panchayat buildings, Block offices, and Ward offices so that citizens are aware of any discrepancies.
The bench comprising Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice Dipankar Dutta, and Justice Joymalya Bagchi emphasized that ordinary citizens should not be inconvenienced based solely on technical grounds. While corrections in the voter list are necessary, the process must be transparent and timely. The Election Commission is urged to consider the difficulties faced by voters.
