Sujit Becomes World Champion at U-23 Wrestling Championship
On October 27, Sujit won the first gold medal for India at the U-23 Senior World Wrestling Championship held in Novi Sad, Serbia. He defeated the Uzbek wrestler 10-0 in the final in the 65 kg freestyle category. Last time, he had to settle for a bronze medal.
Sujit has previously won the U-23 Asian titles in 2022 and 2025. This gold medal is India’s first at this tournament. Meanwhile, the Indian women’s team won 5 bronze and 2 silver medals, becoming the overall champions.
Path to Gold
In the final, Sujit demonstrated technical superiority by defeating the Uzbek wrestler 10-0. Earlier in the tournament:
- First round: defeated Moldova's Fiodor Chevdari 12-2.
- Second round: defeated Poland's Dominik Jakub 11-0.
- Quarterfinal: defeated Bashir Magomedov 4-2.
- Semifinal: defeated Japan's Yuto Nishiyuchi 3-2 to reach the final.
Women's Team Success
The Indian women’s wrestling team performed exceptionally well, winning 5 bronze and 2 silver medals and securing the overall championship title.
Men's Team Performance
In the men’s category, India won only one medal, Sujit’s gold. Two other male wrestlers reached the bronze medal bouts but could not secure a win.
