State Government to Empower Department Heads with Expanded Powers
After taking several steps in the interest of employees on May 22, the government is now set to make another significant decision. Department heads will now have the authority to hire interns. These interns will not receive any stipend, but they will be given a certificate of training, which will prove valuable for their career. Additionally, department heads will also be given the authority to purchase office supplies, including furniture, laptops, and other equipment. This decision is part of a broader plan to double financial powers in response to inflation and the growing needs of departments.
This provision will be implemented by amending the Book of Finance. The finance department has already sent the proposal for Cabinet approval. According to departmental officials, the financial rights of department heads were revised in 2016. Previously, department heads did not have the authority to purchase laptops, furniture, or office equipment. If needed, they had to submit a proposal to their department, which would then seek approval from the finance department for the necessary action. Department heads range from the Director of Agriculture to the Transport Commissioner.
