Starlink Gets Approval to Offer Satellite Internet Services in India
Elon Musk's Starlink has received preliminary approval from the Indian government to roll out its satellite internet services in the country. According to reports, India's Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued a Letter of Intent (LoI) to Starlink. However, the final operating license will only be granted once Starlink fulfills all required conditions.
A government official reportedly told Moneycontrol that Starlink has received the LoI for GMPCS, VSAT, and ISP licenses. After meeting all the license requirements, SpaceX’s Starlink will be allowed to officially launch its services in India.
According to The Washington Post, Indian authorities have moved swiftly to allow Starlink's entry into the country, viewing it as a step that could support broader U.S.-India trade discussions.
Starlink’s Potential in India
Launching Starlink in India could be worth billions of dollars to SpaceX. Even a 1% share of India’s consumer broadband market could reportedly generate around $1 billion annually for the company.
Now that Starlink has received the LoI, the company may soon showcase its satellite internet services. Starlink would compete with OneWeb, which already offers satellite broadband in India and is significantly backed by Airtel.
Jio and Airtel Signed Agreements with Starlink
Earlier this year, both Jio and Airtel signed agreements with Starlink to bring its services to Indian users. The deal, announced in March 2025, was contingent on Starlink receiving the necessary regulatory approval—which it has now reportedly obtained.
However, as of now, neither Starlink nor SpaceX has officially confirmed this development. All the current information is based on media reports.
