ISRO's SPADEx mission has brought India closer to its first-ever satellite docking in space. After trials at distances of 15 and 3 meters, the satellites were safely moved back to a secure distance. The next steps will be determined after further data analysis. This mission has marked a historic step as India prepares to make a significant advancement in space exploration.
According to the update from ISRO, the SPADEx mission involved two satellites: S01 (Chaser) and SDX 02 (Target). These satellites came as close as 15 meters and 3 meters during the trials. Following this, the spacecraft were safely moved back to a secure distance. After analyzing the collected data, the next steps for the docking procedure will be determined.
ISRO has called this space docking experiment a "thrilling handshake" between the two satellites. Last night, when ISRO reported that the sensors were being evaluated and everything was normal, the satellites were 230 meters apart. ISRO further stated that the satellites were positioned at a 15-meter holding distance. Videos and images taken by the spacecraft were also released. Around 3:10 AM, the distance between the satellites was reduced to 105 meters, and two hours later, ISRO confirmed they were ready for a "handshake" at 15 meters.
The next step was to bring the satellites to a distance of 3 meters and initiate the final docking command. The SPADEx mission was launched on December 30, 2024, using the PSLV C60 rocket from Sriharikota. The satellites were placed in a circular orbit at an altitude of 475 kilometers. ISRO had delayed the historic satellite docking twice before, but as ISRO Chief Dr. S. Somnath mentioned, this was India's first attempt at docking, and every first attempt brings its own challenges.
