Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews Retires from Test Cricket

Angelo Mathews Announces Retirement from Test Cricket

Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews has officially announced his retirement from Test cricket. On Friday, Mathews took to social media to share the news. He wrote, "The first Test against Bangladesh in June, scheduled from June 17 to 21 in Galle, will be the final Test of my career. I will remain available for white-ball selection if my country needs me."

Mathews, 37, has not been part of Sri Lanka's white-ball squad for nearly a year. He made his Test debut in 2009 and has played 118 Test matches. Over a 16-year career, Mathews contributed not only with the bat but also showcased leadership qualities during his captaincy tenure.

‘I've Given Everything to Cricket’ – Mathews

Mathews shared an emotional message on X (formerly Twitter), stating, "Now it's time to say goodbye to my favorite format — international Test cricket. Representing Sri Lanka for the past 17 years has been the greatest honor and privilege of my life. Wearing the national jersey and playing for the country is unmatched."

He added, "I've given my everything to cricket, and in return, the game has given me back even more — shaping the person I am today. I'm truly grateful to the thousands of Sri Lankan fans who stood by me during the highs and lows of my journey. My sincere thanks to Sri Lanka Cricket, all the coaches, and everyone who supported me. A chapter closes, but my love for the game will remain forever."
