Sickle Cell Prevalent in MP & Employee Promotions Underway
Sickle Cell Cases Highest in Madhya Pradesh
Prime Minister Modi aims to eradicate sickle cell anemia by 2047. Madhya Pradesh has the highest number of sufferers, with increasing numbers due to mass screenings. Odisha ranks second, and Barwani district has the most cases in MP.
Recently, MP tested 13 million people for sickle cell anemia at the governor’s direction, finding 28,128 patients — including 3,662 in Barwani. Most cases are among tribes, and serious complications include anemia, joint pain, and early childhood mortality.
Screening is vital before marriage; if both parents carry the trait, the child’s risk increases. In Indore's MY Hospital, 1,400 patients are registered and treated. A specialized molecular lab performs prenatal testing to identify affected fetuses. Bone marrow transplants are also offered. Nearly 10% of tribal communities are carriers, with 1% affected. 27 of MP’s 45 districts fall in the sickle cell zone.
MP Government to Implement Promotions Twice a Year
MP Cabinet approved the 2025 promotion rules after a nine-year delay. The General Administration Department is preparing seniority lists in June, enabling promotions twice in 1.5 years — first for ministry staff, then across departments.
The rules will be notified within a week, and departmental promotion committees will ensure all employees are considered according to seniority and eligibility.
Up to ten posts will be filled from 24 candidates based on January 1, 2025 seniority. Reserved quotas apply first: 20% SC/ST, 16% ST. Reserved posts fill first, then unreserved. Qualified promotion candidates from any category will retain their reservation status.
Training will be provided to department officials on new rules. The first round aims to complete promotions in June with another round scheduled September–October for 2026.
