Sheikh Hasina Sentenced to Death by Bangladesh Court
Conviction by the International Crimes Tribunal
On November 17, 2025, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, was sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in Dhaka. She was convicted for inciting and ordering murders during the July 2024 student protests. In addition to the death sentence, she was given life imprisonment for other charges.
Other Accused and Sentences
Former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan was also found guilty of the murders and sentenced to death. The court's decision was met with applause from the people present in the courtroom. Abdullah Al-Mamun, former IGP, was sentenced to 5 years in prison. He is currently in custody and has become a government witness.
Extradition Request by Bangladesh's Interim PM
After the verdict, Bangladesh's Interim PM, Mohammad Yunus, called on India to extradite Sheikh Hasina. Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan have been residing in India for over 15 months since fleeing the country after a military coup on August 5, 2024. Bangladesh's Prime Minister's office issued a statement demanding Hasina's return as per the extradition treaty between India and Bangladesh.
International Crimes Tribunal Established by Hasina
The International Crimes Tribunal that sentenced Sheikh Hasina was established by her government in 2010, aimed at prosecuting war criminals and perpetrators of atrocities committed during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. Although the law for the tribunal was enacted in 1973, the process was delayed for decades until Hasina's government officially set it up to seek justice for the victims.
