Rohit Krishna Becomes India’s 89th Grandmaster
Rising chess star Rohit Krishna S, a 19-year-old from Chennai, has etched his name into the record books by becoming India’s 89th Grandmaster on August 13. This achievement highlights Tamil Nadu’s continued dominance in producing world-class chess talent.
Rohit secured the prestigious title after meeting all required FIDE norms and crossing the 2500 Elo rating threshold. The Grandmaster title is the highest recognition awarded by the International Chess Federation (FIDE). To earn this honor, a player must achieve three GM norms and attain a minimum rating of 2500.
Rohit’s consistent performances across various national and international tournaments played a key role in this milestone, placing him among India’s top young chess players.
Tamil Nadu has long been a powerhouse in Indian chess, producing a majority of the country's Grandmasters. Notable legends such as Viswanathan Anand, R. Praggnanandhaa, and D. Gukesh also hail from this state. Rohit Krishna’s success further strengthens Tamil Nadu’s rich legacy in the global chess arena.
