Red Alert Issued in Kerala Due to High UV Radiation Levels
The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) issued a ‘Red Alert’ in Palakkad district on Thursday after high levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation were detected in the region. According to an official release on March 13, the UV radiation index in the district was recorded at 11, measured through UV meters installed in Thrithala and Ponnani areas of Palakkad and Malappuram districts.
Precautions and Health Advisory
KSDMA has warned the public to take adequate safety precautions, as prolonged exposure to UV rays can lead to skin diseases, eye problems, and other health issues. It was noted that the highest UV index in the district is recorded between 10 AM and 3 PM. During these hours, it is advised to avoid direct sun exposure for extended periods as much as possible.
The advisory also mentioned that people engaged in outdoor work, fishermen at sea, those in water transport, cyclists, tourists, individuals with skin diseases, eye problems, cancer patients, and other groups with weak immune systems should be especially vigilant. The public has been advised to wear cotton clothing that covers the entire body and use hats, umbrellas, and sunglasses when going outside during the day.
Higher altitude and tropical regions generally experience higher UV indices. Even in these areas, UV levels can remain high on clear and cloudless days.
