RBI Forms Committee on Ethical Use of AI

   

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced the formation of an eight-member committee on December 26 to develop a framework for the responsible and ethical use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the financial sector. According to the RBI, Professor Pushpak Bhattacharya from the Computer Science and Engineering Department at IIT Mumbai will chair the committee. The committee will assess the current level of acceptance of AI in financial services both globally and domestically. It will also review regulatory and supervisory approaches to AI in the global financial sector.

    

   

The panel will identify potential risks associated with AI. It will recommend measures for assessing, mitigating, monitoring, and ensuring compliance with AI-related risks in banks, non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), and financial technology firms.

    

   

This committee's formation was announced after the RBI's monetary policy review meeting earlier this month. In line with that announcement, RBI has released the details of the committee members and their responsibilities. The committee will recommend a framework for the responsible and ethical adoption of AI models and applications in the Indian financial sector. The members of the committee include Debjani Ghosh (Independent Director, RBI Innovation Hub), Balraman Ravindran (Professor and Head, Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI, IIT Madras), Abhishek Singh (Additional Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology), Rahul Mathan (Partner, Trilegal), Anjani Rathore (Group Head and Chief Digital Experience Officer, HDFC Bank), Sri Hari Nagaralu (Head of Security AI Research, Microsoft India), and Suvendu Pathi (Chief General Manager, Financial Technology, RBI).
