भारतीय ग्रैंडमास्टर आर प्रगनानंद ने 17 जनवरी को टाटा स्टील मास्टर्स 2024 के चौथे राउंड में मौजूदा वर्ल्ड चैंपियन चीन के डिंग लिरेन को हरा दिया। उन्होंने इस बड़ी जीत के साथ टूर्नामेंट के पांचवें राउंड में जगह बना ली है। वे विश्वनाथन आनंद के बाद क्लासिकल शतरंज के डिफेंडिंग वर्ल्ड चैंपियन को हराने वाले दूसरे भारतीय हैं।

इसी के साथ प्रगनानंद, विश्वनाथन आनंद को पीछे छोड़कर लाइव क्लासिकल शतरंज रैंकिंग में भारत के नंबर-1 चेस खिलाड़ी बन गए। 18 साल के प्रगनानंद 2748.3 रेटिंग अंकों के साथ दो स्थान की छलांग लगाकर कुल मिलाकर 11वें स्थान पर पहुंच गए, जो आनंद से 0.3 ज्यादा है।
