Patalpani-Kalakund Declared Madhya Pradesh's First Heritage Railway Track
September 14 marks a proud moment for Madhya Pradesh as the historic Patalpani to Kalakund railway route has been officially recognized as the state's first heritage rail track. The Ministry of Railways declared the 9.5 km section between Patalpani Railway Station and Kalakund Station as a heritage track through an official notification signed by Railway Board Executive Director Ashima Mehrotra.
This rail route is renowned for its natural beauty and historical importance. Winding through dense forests and rugged hills, it has long been popular among tourists. The heritage train that runs during the monsoon season adds to the route’s charm. Patalpani Waterfall, located along this track, attracts both domestic and international visitors who come to witness its majestic flow and the surrounding landscape.
The track has a rich history as well. The Patalpani-Kalakund meter gauge section began operations on July 1, 1878 — making it nearly 147 years old. It is the first route under Western Railway to receive the heritage status. This recognition is expected to boost tourism in the region and give Madhya Pradesh’s cultural heritage national recognition.
Patalpani Waterfall is also known as "Tiger Fall." It is believed to be so deep that it reaches the underworld (Patal). Due to its unknown depth, the waterfall has an air of mystery that adds to its allure. No one has been able to measure its depth till now, which fuels local legends about its mystical depth.
