Original Kolhapuri Chappals to Feature QR Codes for Authenticity
On July 27, the iconic Kolhapuri chappals once again came into the spotlight. These traditional Indian sandals are gaining popularity not just in India but also internationally. Recently, Italian luxury brand Prada was accused of copying the design of Kolhapuri chappals, which further fueled global attention.
These chappals already hold a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, marking their cultural and regional uniqueness. Now, to further strengthen their identity and fight against counterfeit products, QR codes will be attached to each original pair.
According to LIDCOM (Leather Industries Development Corporation of Maharashtra) officials, this move will benefit local artisans and increase customer trust. The QR code will serve as proof of authenticity, helping buyers distinguish genuine Kolhapuri chappals from imitations.
