One-Time Option to Switch from UPS to NPS for Central Government Employees

Central government employees have been given a final chance to switch from the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) back to the National Pension System (NPS). This switch is allowed only once and must be exercised before the deadline of 30th September 2025. After this date, switching will no longer be permitted.

Official Notification and Press Release

On August 25, the Government of India issued a notification allowing employees currently under the UPS to switch back to NPS. This is a one-time, one-way switch as per the notification. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has also released a detailed report regarding the same.

Conditions for Switching from UPS to NPS

• The switch can only be made once and is irreversible. Once you opt back into NPS, you cannot return to UPS.
• The switch must be made at least one year before retirement or three months before voluntary retirement, whichever is applicable.
• Employees facing disciplinary proceedings or penalties such as dismissal, removal, or compulsory retirement are not eligible for the switch.
• If an eligible employee does not choose to switch within the specified time frame, they will automatically continue under UPS by default.

Last Date to Apply

The last date to apply for switching from UPS to NPS is 30th September 2025. After this date, employees who remain in NPS will no longer be able to opt for UPS.

This initiative aims to empower central government employees by allowing them to make an informed choice regarding their post-retirement financial security. By choosing UPS, employees retain the option to switch back to NPS until the final deadline, helping them plan their future more effectively.
