The US Department of Defense and the Ministry of Defense of the Government of India signed a bilateral, non-binding Security of Supply Management Agreement. Two very important defense agreements were signed with the US. One of these is Security of Supply Management (SOSA) and the other is about the appointment of liaisoning officers. Among these, SOSA is a bilateral and non-binding agreement, which the US has so far signed with only 18 countries. Under this agreement, both countries will give priority to each other for goods and services that promote national defense. At the same time, it is believed that after the signing of SOSA, the supply of engines to Tejas will be ensured soon. Also, it will prove to be a major factor in strengthening the US-India Defense Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI).
What is SOSA?
The signing of SOSA will enable both countries to obtain the necessary industrial resources from each other to resolve unexpected supply chain disruptions to meet national security requirements. Under SOSA, both countries will give priority to each other for the supply of goods required for defense. At the same time, SOSA has been signed at a time when the supply chain has been affected all over the world due to the Ukraine-Russia war. India has also not remained untouched by its impact. At the same time, India is the 18th SOSA partner of the US. Other SOSA partners include Australia, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
What is the Liaisoning Officers Agreement?
Appointment of liaison officers between the two countries. In a joint statement issued after the meeting between US President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year, both sides noted that it is important to share information and appoint liaison officers in each other's military organizations. This will promote joint service cooperation.
