Non-Urea Fertilizer Subsidy Increased for Rabi Season in India
Before the 21st installment of the PM Kisan scheme, the Indian government has taken a significant step in favor of farmers. To provide relief from expensive fertilizers during the Rabi season, the government has increased subsidies on phosphorus and sulfur-based non-urea fertilizers to ₹37,952 crore, around ₹14,000 crore higher than the previous Rabi season. The new rates are applicable from October 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026.
Relief for Farmers from Expensive Fertilizers
According to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, last year the subsidy for the Rabi season was ₹24,000 crore. This time, it has been increased to ₹37,952 crore. The government aims to ensure that essential fertilizers such as DAP and TSP are available to farmers at affordable rates without increasing retail prices.
New Subsidy Rates
| Fertilizer | Previous Subsidy (₹/kg) | New Subsidy (₹/kg) |
|---|---|---|
| Phosphorus | 43.60 | 47.96 |
| Sulfur | 1.77 | 2.87 |
| Nitrogen | 43.02 | 43.02 |
| Potash | 2.38 | 2.38 |
NBSS Scheme (Nutrient-Based Subsidy Scheme)
The subsidy is provided under the Nutrient-Based Subsidy Scheme (NBSS), implemented since April 2010. Fertilizer companies are given a fixed amount per kilogram of nutrients to sell fertilizers to farmers at subsidized rates. The government also provides transport and distribution subsidies, ensuring timely and affordable fertilizer delivery even in remote areas.
