Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2025 Awarded for Metal-Organic Frameworks
The 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to Susumu Kitagawa (Japan), Richard Robson (Australia), and Omar M. Yaghi (USA) for their groundbreaking work in creating Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs).
The announcement was made by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences on October 8. These scientists developed unique atomic structures with large empty spaces that allow gases and other chemical substances to pass through easily.
These frameworks form porous crystals that can be custom-designed to capture or store specific substances. Their applications are vast — including water harvesting from desert air, pollution removal, carbon dioxide purification, storage of toxic gases, and enhancing chemical reactions.
The laureates will share the Nobel prize money of 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately ₹10.3 crore INR / $1 million USD), along with a gold medal and certificate. The awards will be officially presented on December 10 in Stockholm.
