Nanda Raj Jat Yatra to Resume in 2026 After 42 Years to Nanda Peak

India is home to many sacred pilgrimages, each with deep cultural and spiritual significance. One such important religious journey is the Nanda Raj Jat Yatra in Uttarakhand. Held once every 12 years, it is considered one of the toughest pilgrimages in Asia.

This unique journey covers around 260 kilometers on foot through challenging Himalayan terrain, taking about 19 to 20 days. In 2026, the Uttarakhand government is preparing to organize this sacred event on a grand scale.

One of the World's Toughest Pilgrimages

The Nanda Raj Jat Yatra, also known as the Nanda Devi Raj Jat, is a religious, historical, and cultural heritage of the Garhwal and Kumaon regions. It is not only a state-level spiritual journey but is also regarded globally as one of the longest foot pilgrimages in the world.

Devotees and visitors from across India and abroad participate in this once-in-12-years journey. Often referred to as the "Kumbh of the Himalayas", this yatra symbolizes the ceremonial departure of Goddess Nanda Devi to her divine abode.

The yatra starts from Nauti village in Chamoli district and passes through dense forests, rivers, alpine meadows (bugyals), and high Himalayan passes before reaching Roopkund and Homkund.

What Makes It Special

  • Resumes after 42 years to Nanda Peak
  • Spans 260 km on foot through Himalayan terrain
  • Symbolic farewell of Goddess Nanda to her in-laws
  • Spiritual and cultural connection across Garhwal and Kumaon
