Nagaland University to Develop Grammar for 18 Naga Languages
Date: September 1, 2025
Naga languages have been taught in schools for decades, but there has never been a dedicated written grammar used in the teaching-learning process. On September 1, 2025, Nagaland University, located in Lumami, Zunheboto district, issued a statement announcing a major initiative to address this gap.
The university will develop structured academic grammar for 18 Naga languages in collaboration with the Directorate of School Education, Government of Nagaland.
This initiative aims to integrate formal grammar into school textbooks from Grade 5 to Grade 12. The project also ensures alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes the preservation and promotion of regional and indigenous languages through structured education.
