Mirabai Chanu’s Golden Comeback at Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship
Indian weightlifting star Mirabai Chanu made a sensational return to competition after a year-long injury layoff, clinching the gold medal at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship 2025. Competing in the 48 kg weight category, Chanu lifted a total of 193 kg — setting new records in both the snatch and clean & jerk events.
Record-Breaking Performance
Mirabai lifted 84 kg in the snatch and 109 kg in clean & jerk, breaking championship records in each segment and the overall total. This marks her return to the 48 kg category, as the 49 kg class she previously competed in is no longer part of the Olympic events.
First Competition Since Paris Olympics
This was Mirabai’s first competition since the Paris Olympics in 2024, where she finished fourth. The 31-year-old athlete had been dealing with a prolonged knee injury that kept her out of action for over a year.
Overcoming Injury and Self-Doubt
She struggled during her first snatch attempt at 84 kg due to pain in her right knee but succeeded on her second try. Her third attempt at 89 kg was unsuccessful. With little competition in her category, Mirabai was essentially competing against herself.
Powerful Clean & Jerk
In clean & jerk, she began with 105 kg and then moved up to 109 kg. Although she attempted 113 kg in her final lift, she couldn’t complete it. Her total of 193 kg secured the top podium spot.
Other Medalists
- Silver: Irene Henry (Malaysia) – 161 kg (73 kg + 88 kg)
- Bronze: Nicole Roberts (Wales) – 150 kg (70 kg + 80 kg)
Return to the 48kg Category
Mirabai’s past achievements include a world championship and two Commonwealth Games medals in the 48 kg category. After 2018, she had shifted to the 49 kg class, but this performance marks a victorious return to her original category.
Other Highlights
In the junior category, Soumya Dalvi also brought home gold for India, adding to the country’s success at the championship.
