Mikheil Kavelashvili Appointed President of Georgia
Former footballer Mikheil Kavelashvili was elected as the President of Georgia on December 14, 2024. The ruling Georgian Dream Party strengthened its control, which the opposition has criticized as a blow to the country's European Union aspirations and a win for former imperial ruler Russia.
The 53-year-old Kavelashvili was the sole candidate on the ballot and easily won the vote. The Georgian Dream Party controls the 300-member electoral college, which replaced direct presidential elections in 2017. This college comprises members of the parliament, municipal councils, and regional legislatures.
