Meera Syal Honored with Damehood in Britain's New Year Honours List
British-Indian artist Meera Syal has been included in the list of British-Indians honored by King Charles III on New Year's Eve. She has been awarded the prestigious title of ‘Damehood’. The London-based comedian, writer, actress, and filmmaker has been recognized for her services to literature, drama, and charity.
The Prime Minister’s Office at Downing Street stated that this year, a total of 1,157 people were chosen for these honors from all parts of the UK, with special focus on those who have made significant contributions in various fields.
Meera Syal, born in the West Midlands of England to Punjabi parents, joins an esteemed group of individuals receiving royal recognition. Alongside Syal, Professor Meena Upadhyay OBE also received the title of Dame.
Other prominent British-Indians in the 2025 honours list include Pavan Popat, CEO of TLC Group, who was awarded the title of ‘Officer of the Order of the British Empire’ (OBE).
