Indian Army has signed an agreement with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) for trials of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus technology, demonstrating its determination towards finding green and sustainable transportation solutions. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Indian Army and Indian Oil Corporation Limited in the presence of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Manoj Pandey and Chairman, Indian Oil Corporation Limited Shri Shrikant Madhav Vaidya. During the event, a Hydrogen Fuel Cell powered bus was handed over to the Indian Army. This marks the beginning of a mutually beneficial partnership between Indian Army and Indian Oil Corporation Limited. The MoU emphasises on the commitment to promote innovation and pursue sustainable transportation solutions for the future.
Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology provides a clean and efficient alternative to electrical energy by converting hydrogen gas into electricity through an electro-chemical process. The process leaves water vapour as the only emitted substance and thus ensures zero emissions.
The hydrogen fuel cell bus has a seating capacity of 37 passengers. It offers an impressive mileage of 250-300 km on a full 30 kg onboard tank of hydrogen fuel.
The Indian Army has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with National Thermal Power Corporation Renewable Energy Limited on 21 March 2023, specifically for setting up a green hydrogen based microgrid power plant on the northern borders of the country. It has become the first government entity to do so. In addition, a pilot project is being launched at Chushul where a 200 kW green hydrogen based microgrid will provide 24x7 clean power to troops deployed in difficult terrain and harsh climatic conditions.
