New Zealand opener Martin Guptill announced his retirement from international cricket on January 8. He holds the record for the highest individual score in a World Cup, having scored an unbeaten 237 runs against the West Indies in the 2015 World Cup.
Guptill is New Zealand's highest run-scorer in T20 internationals. He is currently leading the Auckland Aces in the Super Smash tournament. In an interview with New Zealand Cricket, he expressed, "Playing for the Black Caps for 14 years was the greatest honor of my life."
Playing for New Zealand Was a Dream Come True
Guptill shared that playing for New Zealand had been his dream since childhood. "I feel fortunate to have played 367 matches for my country. I want to thank all my teammates and coaching staff, especially Mark O'Donnell, who trained me at the under-19 level," he said.
14 Years of International Cricket
The 38-year-old Guptill played international cricket for New Zealand for 14 years, from 2009 to 2022. Over this period, he played 367 matches, scoring 23 centuries. Guptill made his international debut in 2009 against the West Indies.
New Zealand's Best T20 Batter
Guptill has scored 3531 runs in 122 T20 internationals. In One Day Internationals (ODIs), he has accumulated 7346 runs in 198 matches. He is the third-highest run scorer for New Zealand in ODIs, behind Ross Taylor and Stephen Fleming.
First Kiwi to Score a Century in ODI Debut
Guptill made history by becoming the first New Zealand batter to score a century in his ODI debut. He achieved this feat in 2009, scoring 122 runs off 135 balls against the West Indies at Eden Park.
Record for Most Runs in a World Cup Match
Guptill also holds the record for the most runs by a Kiwi player in a single World Cup match. He scored an unbeaten 237 runs off 163 balls, including 24 fours and 11 sixes, which remains the highest individual score by a New Zealand batter in ODIs.
47 Test Matches
Guptill played 47 Test matches for New Zealand, scoring 2586 runs. This included 17 half-centuries and 3 centuries. His highest Test scores were 189 runs against Bangladesh in 2010, 109 runs against Zimbabwe in 2011, and 156 runs against Sri Lanka in 2015.
