Mark Carney Becomes Canada's New Prime Minister After Liberal Party Victory

The Liberal Party of Canada, led by Mark Carney, has won the federal elections held on April 28. The party secured 167 seats, just shy of the 172 required for an outright majority. Nevertheless, Carney is set to remain the Prime Minister.

Jagmeet Singh, leader of the pro-Khalistan New Democratic Party (NDP), lost his seat in Burnaby Central, British Columbia, to Liberal candidate Wade Chang. Singh received around 27% of the vote, while Chang garnered over 40%. Following his defeat, a visibly emotional Singh addressed party workers and announced his resignation.

The NDP faced a significant decline in its vote share and may lose its national party status, which requires a minimum of 12 seats in Parliament. These elections occurred amid heightened tensions between Canada and the United States over an ongoing tariff dispute.

The official election results are expected to be released on April 30 or May 1.

In his victory speech, Carney stated that Canadians must now take on challenges once thought impossible, and do so with unprecedented urgency. “Trump wants to break us, but we will not let that happen,” he declared.

Carney warned that the United States, under President Trump, desires control over Canada’s land, resources, and water. “As I’ve been saying for months, Trump wants to divide us so he can dominate us. But that will never happen,” he said firmly.

He added that he would soon meet President Trump to discuss the future of economic and strategic ties between the two countries. “I will go into that conversation knowing that Canada has many other options to prosper and grow,” Carney concluded.
