Marathi Mandatory for Auto and Taxi Drivers in Maharashtra

Marathi Made Mandatory for Auto and Taxi Drivers in Maharashtra

In Maharashtra, learning Marathi will now be mandatory for auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers. However, some relief has been provided to already licensed drivers. The rule of immediate license cancellation for not knowing Marathi has been put on hold by the government.

State minister Pratap Sarnaik announced that the Maharashtra Transport Department will launch a special verification campaign from May 1 to August 15. The aim is to ensure effective implementation of the decision to make Marathi mandatory for auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers across the state.

Focus on Training Instead of Penalty

The minister clarified that while the rule is being implemented, the focus will be on training drivers to learn Marathi rather than immediately canceling their licenses.

He also stated that strict action will be taken against those who violate the rules. Representatives of auto and taxi unions have expressed full support for this decision.

Monitoring and Implementation

The campaign will be conducted across all 59 Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) in the state under the supervision of a committee headed by Additional Transport Commissioner Ravindra Gaikwad.

Training and Certification

  • Facilities will be provided at RTO offices for drivers to learn Marathi.
  • Drivers who complete the training will receive a certificate from the state government.
  • This certificate will be required during license renewal.

A report on the 100-day campaign will be presented on August 16, based on which further decisions will be taken.
