Maratha Military Landscape Added to UNESCO World Heritage List

UNESCO has officially inscribed the Maratha Military Landscape into the World Heritage List during the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee (WHC). This recognition was granted under India's official nomination for the 2024–25 cycle.

Following the inclusion of the Moidams of Charaideo in Assam earlier in 2024, the Maratha Military Landscape becomes India's 44th World Heritage Site.

What is the Maratha Military Landscape?

The Maratha Military Landscape consists of 12 major forts, most of which are located in Maharashtra, with one situated in Tamil Nadu. These forts were either constructed or expanded between the late 17th and early 19th centuries.

Strategically located in coastal and hill regions, these forts formed a robust defense network that supported the Maratha military strength, trade, and territorial control during their rule.
