Madhya Pradesh has become the first state in the country to produce spice crops. In the year 2023-24, the farmers of the state sowed spice crops in a record 8 lakh 32 thousand 419 hectares and produced more than 54 lakh tonnes of spice crops, which is a record. The Horticulture and Food Processing Department is specially encouraging the farmers to adopt horticultural crops along with agriculture, as a result of which last year, by expanding 13 thousand 110 hectares of horticultural crops in the state, a grant of Rs 44 crore 85 lakh has been provided to 42,730 farmers. Farmers are also getting attracted towards the production of spice crops, turmeric, garlic, green and red chillies, ginger, coriander, fenugreek, cumin and fennel due to the increasing demand for them in the market. In the last four years, the production of spice crops has increased by 2 lakh 16 thousand metric tonnes. The sowing area of spice crops has also increased. In the year 2021-22, sowing was done in 8 lakh 23 thousand 918 hectares, which has increased to 8 lakh 82 thousand 419 hectares in the year 2023-24. As a result, the total production of spice crops in the year 2021-22 was 46 lakh 74 thousand 807 metric tonnes, which has increased to 54 lakh 167 metric tonnes in the year 2023-24.
