PM Modi Flags Off Indore Metro Virtually from Bhopal
On May 31, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the Indore Metro from Bhopal. The first ride was taken by women passengers. The train departed from Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Terminal at 12:09 PM and reached Veerangana Jhalkari Bai station at 12:20 PM after an 11-minute journey. It then departed at 12:22 PM and returned to the terminal by 12:34 PM.
All Metro Stations Named After Female Warriors
All stations on the Indore Metro Yellow Line have been named after Indian heroines including:
- Maharani Lakshmibai Station
- Rani Avanti Bai Lodhi Station
- Rani Durgavati Station
- Veerangana Jhalkari Bai Station
This 6-km Yellow Line is part of a super-priority corridor aimed at reducing urban pollution.
Free Travel for the First Week
As per the Indore Metro authority, rides will be free for the first week. After that, the fare will be ₹20 for two stations and ₹30 for more than two stations.

Passengers can enjoy beautiful views of the city’s greenery during the journey. The metro promotes clean and green urban transport.
Leaders Share Their Vision
Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya said naming stations after historic women promotes women's empowerment, a cause initiated by Devi Ahilyabai in the 18th century—long before countries like the US.
Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav stated that Indore, already #1 in cleanliness, is now moving toward becoming #1 in development as well.
Connectivity and Facilities
Municipal Commissioner Shivam Verma mentioned that feeder buses and e-rickshaws will soon be available at metro stations. Local area planning includes parking and multi-modal transport access.
Vande Mataram Echoed at the Metro Terminal
During PM Modi’s address at a women’s conference in Bhopal, his live telecast was shown at the Indore metro terminal. His chants of “Vande Mataram” were echoed at the terminal by the crowd.
Women Carrying 12 Jyotirlingas
Women passengers carried symbolic 12 Jyotirlingas during the inaugural journey, reflecting cultural and spiritual significance.
Green Signal by Leaders
After the virtual launch, Union Minister Tokhan Sahu, Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, MP Shankar Lalwani, and Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav flagged off the first metro train from Indore.
Metro Driver Thanks Passengers
Metro driver Nishant Sagare expressed his joy, thanking citizens for participating in the metro’s first ride with great enthusiasm.
