Justice Suryakant to Become 53rd Chief Justice of India
Justice Suryakant is set to become the 53rd Chief Justice of India. The current Chief Justice Gavai has recommended his appointment to the central government.
He has been part of several landmark rulings, including the abrogation of Article 370. Born in Hisar district, Haryana, Justice Suryakant's tenure as Chief Justice is expected to last approximately 15 months.
He has delivered significant judgments on issues such as freedom of expression and gender equality. Justice Suryakant is the second-most senior judge in the Supreme Court after Chief Justice Gavai.
Following Chief Justice Gavai's retirement on 23 November 2025, Justice Suryakant will take office as the 53rd Chief Justice on 24 November 2025. Chief Justice Gavai, who took oath on 14 May 2025, recommended Justice Suryakant to the Ministry of Law and Justice as the next Chief Justice.
