Justice Suryakant Sworn in as 53rd Chief Justice of India
Senior-most Supreme Court judge Justice Suryakant on Monday took oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI). President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan at 10 AM. Justice Suryakant succeeded CJI B.R. Gavai, who retired on Sunday. He is expected to serve in this position for approximately 15 months.
Oath Ceremony Highlights
The oath-taking ceremony was attended by several dignitaries including Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Haryana Chief Minister Naib Singh Saini, former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Justice Gavai, current and former Supreme Court judges, along with prominent personalities from law and politics.
Sources also reported that Chief Justices and judges from Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Malaysia, Brazil, and Kenya were present at the event.
