Justice Surya Kant Appointed as India's Next Chief Justice
Following the retirement of Chief Justice BR Gavai, the senior-most Supreme Court judge, Justice Surya Kant, has been appointed as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI). Justice Gavai will retire on November 23, 2025.
Justice Surya Kant will take the oath as CJI on November 24, 2025, and assume office. His tenure as the Chief Justice will be 14 months, and he will retire on February 9, 2027.
Justice Surya Kant has been part of several landmark benches delivering historic judgments, including the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu & Kashmir, the Pegasus surveillance case, and the Bihar SIR case.
Union Minister for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, announced the appointment of Justice Surya Kant on X and extended heartfelt congratulations on his appointment as the Chief Justice of India.
