Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh said that India is set to become the sixth country with a deep sea mission. While chairing a meeting on the 100-day action plan of the ministry, Singh expressed pride and happiness over the progress of the deep sea mission. Said that India has joined the few countries to achieve this feat.
He asked the institutions to focus on empowering people dependent on the sea and its energy for livelihood.
He said that the deep sea mission is not limited to mineral exploration, but also the development of marine science, discovery of flora and fauna and conservation of marine biodiversity. He praised the efforts of the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) for the development of Matsyayan 6000. It can dive up to 6,000 meters deep in the sea.
Singh praised the ministry for working closely with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) to develop the 'titanium hull' for the ship.
