Jasprit Bumrah Named ICC Test Player of the Year 2024
Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been awarded the ICC Test Player of the Year. In the race for the title, England's Joe Root, Harry Brook, and Sri Lanka's Kamindu Mendis were also contenders. The International Cricket Council (ICC) made the announcement. Bumrah becomes the first Indian fast bowler to win this prestigious title. He took 71 wickets last year, showcasing his remarkable performance.
In addition to Bumrah's achievement, Afghanistan's Azmatullah won the ODI Player of the Year award. In the women’s category, India’s vice-captain Smriti Mandhana was named ODI Player of the Year. The ICC annually recognizes the best players in T20, ODI, and Test formats.
Bumrah's Performance in 2024
In 2024, Bumrah took 71 wickets in 13 Test matches, making him the fourth Indian bowler to take over 70 wickets in a calendar year. Before him, Ravichandran Ashwin, Anil Kumble, and Kapil Dev achieved this feat. To date, only 17 bowlers in Test cricket have taken more than 70 wickets in a calendar year, but none had an average as low as Bumrah's 14.92.
