Jammu & Kashmir to Become Global Horticulture Hub: Shivraj Singh Chouhan

Union Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, stated on July 4 that Jammu & Kashmir will be developed as a global horticulture hub. Speaking at the convocation ceremony of SKUAST in Srinagar, he praised the high quality of apples grown in the region and emphasized that India will now export apples, not import them.

He highlighted the transformation taking place in the region and encouraged people to visit J&K without fear. “We will make the valley of paradise a hub of horticulture,” he said.

“Peace, not war – love, not hate”

During his address, Chouhan emphasized the core values of peace and love for driving development in Jammu & Kashmir and the country. “I am confident India will gain greater global recognition and become the world’s food basket,” he said.

Reaffirming Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to the development of J&K, Chouhan declared, “I am also determined to make Jammu & Kashmir the horticultural hub of the world.”

Focus on Local Production and Export

Addressing the sixth convocation of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST), he pointed out the irony that while Kashmir grows exceptional apples, the saplings often have to be imported. “This will change now,” he said.

“The yield per hectare has increased from 10 tons to 60 tons—sixfold growth. I want Kashmiri apples to be exported worldwide, and India should not need to import them anymore,” he added.

Improving Conditions and People's Warmth

Chouhan shared his experience in Srinagar: “I’ve been here since Thursday. The cool breeze, the scent of the soil, the natural beauty, and the love from the people have touched my heart.”

He mentioned conversations with locals, including a Shikara boatman on Dal Lake, who urged him to tell others to visit. “Their hearts are full of love,” he said.

Addressing J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, he said, “Omar ji, I remember your emotional appeal at the NITI Aayog meeting where you asked ministers to visit Jammu & Kashmir. We accepted that invitation, and I’ve held a consultative committee meeting here as well.”
