Jabalpur’s Mohari Pond Records Highest Bird Diversity

Mohari Pond in Jabalpur has recorded the highest number of bird species in Madhya Pradesh. The Ramsar site Bhoj Wetland at Bishankhedi in Bhopal secured the second position in terms of bird species diversity. The highest number of bird species were documented in the Jabalpur Forest Division.

The natural beauty of the Narmada Valley and the favorable climate of Jabalpur’s reservoirs are attracting rare migratory birds from across the world. This year, more than 200 bird species including Scottish Osprey, Steppe Eagle, and White-tailed Eagle arrived from Europe and colder regions of the Northern Hemisphere.

These migratory birds have settled around the Bargi Dam and nearby ponds, enhancing the ecological significance of the region.

According to forest department officials, an annual bird census was recently conducted across 20 major ponds and reservoirs, including the Narmada River, in Jabalpur. The survey was jointly organized by the Forest Department, Wetlands International, and the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS).

More than 25 bird watchers and wildlife experts participated in the census. The results were both encouraging and impressive. The survey recorded thousands of birds belonging to 213 different species across Jabalpur’s water bodies.
