The ceasefire agreement has been reached after almost 15 months of conflict in Gaza. U.S. Presidents Joe Biden and elected President Donald Trump have confirmed the agreement. Trump stated that this deal would be used to expand the Abraham Accords, which were signed during his first term and helped normalize relations between Israel and several Arab countries. The Prime Minister of Qatar also confirmed that the deal would be implemented from January 19.
Celebrations in Gaza
As soon as the ceasefire agreement was reached, people in Gaza took to the streets to celebrate the end of the prolonged conflict.
33 Israeli Hostages to Be Released
Though the formal details of the agreement are yet to be disclosed, one official revealed that the initial phase would include a six-week ceasefire. This phase will include a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, the release of 33 Israeli hostages, and the release of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli custody.
In the first stage, 33 Israeli hostages, including women, children, and men over the age of 50, will be released. The second phase of the agreement will begin on the 16th day of the first phase, with negotiations for the release of other hostages, a permanent ceasefire, and the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
Third Phase and Gaza Reconstruction
The third phase could involve the return of the remaining bodies and the start of Gaza's reconstruction under the supervision of Egypt, Qatar, and the United Nations. This agreement has been made possible due to months of mediation by Egypt and Qatar, with U.S. support, just days before Donald Trump’s inauguration.
Trump’s Role and Future Challenges
Trump expressed his excitement that Israeli and American hostages would be returning home. He also stated that he would continue to work with Israel and allies to ensure that Gaza does not become a safe haven for terrorists again. However, even with the agreement in place, both parties still face significant challenges, including security guarantees for Israel and the enormous financial cost of Gaza's reconstruction. Another unresolved issue is the governance of Gaza after the conflict, as Israel refuses to accept Hamas’ involvement in governing the region.
Displacement and Casualties in Gaza
It is noteworthy that nearly 90% of the population in Gaza, which has a population of 2.3 million, has been displaced, and more than 46,000 Palestinians have lost their lives during the conflict. This agreement may reduce tensions in the region and decrease the likelihood of a war between Israel and Iran.
Pressure on Israel and Netanyahu
This agreement is expected to reduce the public dissatisfaction with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has been under pressure to release hostages. Furthermore, Israel faced significant international pressure, including from its ally the United States. The International Court of Justice had labeled Israeli actions as genocide, and the International Criminal Court had issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu.
Hamas Attack in 2023
The conflict began in October 2023, when Hamas gunmen attacked Israeli border areas, killing approximately 1,200 soldiers and civilians and taking over 250 foreigners and Israelis as hostages. Over 100 hostages were released during the temporary ceasefire last week.
